What the Atlanta cold storage building does

It is a distribution warehouse that happens to be cold. That difference shows up in how fast product turns.

Frozen and refrigerated storage

Segregated frozen rooms run down to -20°F. Refrigerated rooms hold 35°F to 40°F, and temperature-controlled space covers 55°F to 70°F for product that cannot take heat but does not need a cooler. Ambient space is in the same building, so dry and cold inventory for one customer can sit under one roof.

Temperature and humidity are monitored around the clock, and the dock itself is refrigerated, so pallets are not sweating on a warm dock between the truck and the room.

  • Frozen rooms, -20°F to 0°F
  • Refrigerated rooms, 35°F to 40°F
  • Temperature-controlled space, 55°F to 70°F, plus ambient
  • Full cold dock with 27 doors and a ripening room
  • Racked and bulk floor storage, heavy-duty and narrow-aisle equipment

Picking, cross-dock and consolidation

Most customers are not just storing. They are shipping cases to retailers, food service distributors or their own plants. The building does high-volume case and bag picking, builds multi-line LTL and truckload orders, and cross-docks or transloads containers, including floor-loaded imports that need to be palletized.

One of the largest beverage manufacturers in the world consolidated its dry, refrigerated and frozen Atlanta inventory here after having it split across several providers. Mixed-temperature orders now leave on one truck.

  • Case and bag picking for FTL and LTL outbounds
  • LTL consolidation with other customers going to the same destination
  • Cross-dock and transload, container devanning and palletizing
  • Labeling, repack and rework in a food-grade environment
  • Carrier scheduling through Porter's dock appointment system

Food safety and traceability

The building runs an AIB GMP and cGMP program, is SQF certified under the GFSI scheme, is FDA registered and holds a Georgia Department of Agriculture food sales license. Porter is also a Global Cold Chain Alliance member and sits on the IWLA Food Grade Warehouse Council.

Every pallet is tracked by lot and expiration date in the WMS with first-in, first-out or first-expired, first-out rotation. When a recall notice comes, the question of where a lot went has an answer in minutes rather than days.

  • AIB GMP and cGMP, SQF certified (GFSI), FDA registered
  • Georgia Department of Agriculture food sales license
  • HACCP-based programs, lot control, FIFO and FEFO
  • Temperature and humidity monitoring with records
  • Customer quality team audits welcome

150,000 square feet of cold space on Porter's Atlanta campus

The cold storage building is one of four Porter Logistics warehouses in the Fulton Industrial district, off I-20 inside the Perimeter. The others are food-grade dry, hazmat and rail-served bulk, so a customer with frozen finished goods and ambient packaging, or a food ingredient that is also a regulated chemical, can keep all of it with one provider a few hundred yards apart.

Equipment is Porter's: heavy-duty forklifts, clamp trucks and narrow-aisle machines, with racked and bulk floor space in each temperature zone.

How a cold storage program starts

Getting pallets into a cold room is not complicated. Getting them in with the right paperwork so they can leave quickly is the part worth doing carefully.

1

Tell us the product

Temperature range, pallet count, case and pallet dimensions, inbound schedule and how orders go out. Peak season volumes if they differ from the average.

2

Space and rate quote

Storage is quoted per pallet per month by temperature zone, handling per pallet or per case. We tell you which rooms your product will go in.

3

Setup and first inbound

Items and lots are set up in the WMS, carriers get appointment access, and the first trucks are received across the cold dock with temperature checks on arrival.

4

Run and report

Orders pick, consolidate and ship. You see inventory by lot and expiration in the dashboard, and the records are there when an auditor or a retailer asks.

Where we are

Off I-20 in the Fulton Industrial district

Atlanta Cold Storage is a Porter Logistics facility in Atlanta, GA.
470-229-1167

The campus is between Fulton Industrial Boulevard and I-20, inside I-285, about 15 minutes from downtown Atlanta. Norfolk Southern and CSX intermodal terminals, the Omnitrax shortline and most LTL carrier hubs are close, which is why the campus works as a consolidation point for the Southeast.

Drivers: the street address and check-in instructions come with the appointment confirmation. Appointments run through Porter's dock scheduling system, which keeps reefers from stacking up on the apron.

Atlanta cold storage questions

Storage is priced per pallet per month and varies by temperature zone, with frozen the highest. Handling in and out is per pallet or per case. Contract length, volume and how often inventory turns move the number, so we quote each program individually. Send pallet counts and temperatures and you will get a real figure, not a range.
There is no fixed minimum space or term. Programs here range from a few hundred pallets to more than 10,000 allocated pallet positions. Very small volumes sometimes fit better in a public cold storage with per-pallet-in pricing, and if that is you, we will point you to one.
Frozen from -20°F to 0°F, refrigerated 35°F to 40°F, temperature-controlled 55°F to 70°F, and ambient. Frozen rooms are segregated, and the dock itself is refrigerated.
Yes. Ambient space is in the same building, and Porter's dry food-grade and hazmat warehouses are next door on the same campus. Customers consolidate mixed-temperature orders onto one truck here, which is usually the biggest freight saving in the whole program.
AIB GMP and cGMP, SQF certification under the GFSI standard, FDA registration and a Georgia Department of Agriculture food sales license. Porter is a Global Cold Chain Alliance member and sits on the IWLA Food Grade Warehouse Council. Customer quality teams audit the building as well.
Yes. Container devanning, palletizing of floor-loaded freight and transloading are everyday work here, and the dock is refrigerated so cold imports are not sitting at ambient while they are unloaded.
Yes. High-volume case and bag picking for FTL and LTL outbounds, and consolidation of LTL freight with other customers going to the same destination. Many customers come for storage and stay for the freight savings.
